Here, we ask designers to take a selfie and give us an inside look at their life.

Age: 35

Occupation: Fashion designer, furniture designer, and builder.

Instagram: @othersideobjects

Hometown: Miami.

Studio location: Downtown Los Angeles.

Describe what you make: I make large wooden shapes on a lathe and turn them into what I believe is joyful furniture, exploring levity and weight within the structures that I build. The bell bottomed legs I’ve been working on lately are intended to feel like heavy robot legs. I like to imagine that the chairs and stools I build stomp around when no one is home.

The most important thing you’ve designed to date: The Bell Chair.

Describe the problem your work solves: I create new pieces using broken furniture that gets left on the side of the road. It’s how Otherside Objects was born. My clients often have no idea I repurpose materials because the final result was so visually removed from its origin.

Describe the project you are working on now: I’m currently working on the production of Otherside Objects’ Collection One, which means that by the time I’m done, I’ll be able to turn the bell-shaped legs in my sleep! I’m also wrapping up my first collaboration: a project I’ve been working on for almost a year. Every piece is a marriage between a discarded piece of furniture that I found and a new luxe material such as marble that was sourced by my  top-secret collaborator. We are hoping for it to be out in late fall.

A new or forthcoming project we should know about: I’m beginning to conceptualize Otherside Objects’ second collection of furniture and objects. I’m excited to continue to explore weight and gravity in my work and also a sense of falling and landing. I’d like to stay true to how I started Otherside Objects by using only found and salvaged materials. Hopefully, the second collection will be showcased in one of 2022’s design fairs!

What you absolutely must have in your studio: Fully charged cordless headphones, water, and iced coffee.

What you do when you’re not working: I feel as though I’m always working, but when I finally take a breath, I spend time catching up with friends or, if it’s summer, going for a swim.

Sources of creative envy: No envy, just gratitude. I’m grateful for Mike Mills and Martin Margiela.

The distraction you want to eliminate: My day job and cell phone. Let’s bring back the landline.

Concrete or marble? Concrete.

High-rise or townhouse? Neither.

Remember or forget? Remember.

Aliens or ghosts? Aliens!!!!

Dark or light? Light.
