Playing off the heels of recent collaborations with ‘47, American artist Tyrrell Winston has reunited with longtime gallerist Louis Buhl & Co. on a new solo exhibition entitled Mr. Irrelevant. Known for his assemblage basketball sculptures and autograph-inspired “Punishment Paintings”, Winston’s new body of work is a noticeable departure from previous series’, as he spotlights arguably the most important aspect of a ballgame itself: the score.

Dubbed Box Score and notably inspired by On Kawara’s Date Paintings, Winston painted a series of final scores from recent matches, many of which stem from the latest NFL postseason, as well as the 2024 March Madness — the color of the background denoting the winner of the contest. Also on view is a new series of pencil and watercolor drawings of various club logos and thoughts that Winston drew on hotel stationary, McDonald’s wrappers and mail envelope, each of which is encased like a sports trading card.

“I’m constantly thinking about whether I can inject myself into art history and have conversations with these artists,” Winston previously told Hypeart. Mr. Irrelevant will be on view in Detroit until May 29.
