Hong Kong‘s M+ museum announced three special exhibitions as part of its 2024 programme this week.
Noir & Blanc: A Story of Photography will feature a vast range of photographs from the museum’s collection and the collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) when it opens in March 2024.
The exhibition, M+’s first exhibition focused on photography, will feature photographers Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus, and Daido Moriyama, among many others.

I. M. Pei: Life Is Architecture, a retrospective of the Chinese American architect will open in June 2024. Pei (1917–2019) realised high profile projects including the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, the modernisation of the Grand Louvre in Paris, the Suzhou Museum, and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha.
The exhibition will include newly commissioned photographs of his buildings as well as architectural models of projects, both built and unbuilt, that will be made in collaboration with architecture schools at The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Guo Pei, China’s first couture fashion designer, is the subject of her own special exhibition opening in September 2024.

At the 2015 Met Gala, Pei famously dressed Rihanna in a golden gown that Chinese netizens compared to jianbing, egg pancakes commonly eaten for breakfast in Mainland China. The gown will be shown at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki exhibition Guo Pei: Fashion, Art, Fantasy (9 December 2023–5 May 2024).
The Met, incidentally, announced the title of The Costume Institute’s 2024 exhibition this week. Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion will open on 10 May following the Met Gala on 6 May.
Visual artists whose works will be presented at M+ next year include Bùi Công Khánh, Movana Chen, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. —[O]
