Plato Gallery is presenting Face the Music, a new solo exhibition by Luke Osborn, now on view in New York through January 4, 2025. Across a showcase of mixed media paintings and drawings, the artist invites us to consider the power of collective moments and the choices we make within them — whether we rise together in unison or lose ourselves in noise.
Beyond depictions of roaring crowds and bustling parties, the central sound of Face the Music emanates from syncopated bursts of colors and shapes repeated in stunning rhythm. The previously abstract series took a turn during a summer residency at Chautauqua School of Art, where Osborn grew an affinity for shapes that resemble musical notes. From there, he introduced a human element to the works, instilling each with a uniquely vibrant animacy.
Taking an experimental approach, Osborn combines drawing, collage, oil paint, and watercolor on a uniquely textured surface of layered gesso and paper pulp. Alive with jagged strokes, stark contrasts and satisfying collisions, even solitude hums with possibility in this space, as if a crowd lingers just out of frame, waiting to embrace or confront.
