The compact Japanese fair continues to encourage international participation, with close to half of this year’s 69 exhibitors coming from overseas.

Art Collaboration Kyoto (ACK), the Japanese art fair premised on cooperation between Japanese and international galleries, will return to Kyoto International Conference Center (ICC Kyoto) from 1 to 3 November 2024, with a preview day on 31 October.

Led by Programme Director Yukako Yamashita, ACK has established a reputation for being a comfortable alternative to mega-fairs. In its fourth year, it will welcome 69 galleries from 19 countries and regions, including 33 new exhibitors.

Yamashita said, ‘the 2024 edition of ACK will be the most exciting edition yet, presenting top Japanese and international galleries inside the ICC Kyoto and exhibitions across breathtaking historic sites and unique venues only found in Kyoto.’

This year, the fair is organised around the theme Resilience—for your own happiness, exploring survival in today’s society and ‘celebrating the preservation and evolution of cultural traditions, expression, and shared values’ she explained.

ACK’s distinct model encourages collaboration across its two sections. The main section, ‘Gallery Collaborations’, spotlights dual presentations by Japanese and international galleries in the same booth. It will welcome 27 Japanese galleries hosting 29 exhibitors from abroad.

Among them, New York‘s Matthew Marks Gallery and Tokyo‘s Taro Nasu will showcase a group presentation by artists Simone Leigh, Robert Gober, Pierre Huyghe, and more.

A first-time participant, Mexico City‘s kurimanzutto will present works by contemporary artists Gabriel Orozco, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Haegue Yang, among others, in their showing with Kyoto gallery Shibunkaku. The latter will bring modern and traditional Japanese works.

Thirteen galleries will participate in the smaller section, ‘Kyoto Meetings’, which showcases presentations with distinct links to Kyoto. Berlin‘s neugerriemschneider, for instance, will present Andreas Eriksson‘s paintings, alongside the artist’s concurrent exhibition at the historic villa of Murin-an.

Perrotin‘s booth of works by Johan Creten and Izumi Kato will explore ‘mythologies and metamorphosis’. Kato’s works will also be on view at Ryosoku-in Temple, alongside that of Bosco Sodi, exhibited with SCAI The Bathhouse in Tokyo.

Speaking of the fair in 2022, Director Yukako Yamashita told Ocula: ‘The layout is much like the city of Kyoto, which has countless small paths and alleyways … We want people to be excited about “getting lost” and taking time for themselves to make their own discoveries.’

During the fair, special exhibitions will be held in the city, partially subsidised by ACK as part of its Open Call programme. Solo exhibitions to catch include He Xiangyu at ARTRO, Lucas Arruda at Daitoku-ji temple, and Ettore Spalletti at Taka Ishii Gallery, Kyoto. —[O]
