The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo will lift the curtain on a new exhibition honoring the visionary work of the late Ryuichi Sakamoto. Titled seeing sound, hearing time, the showcase of large-scale installations invites viewers into the world of the creative polymath, expanding his imaginative world of sound, space, and time.

The exhibition marks the first comprehensive survey in Japan entirely dedicated to Sakamoto’s pioneering works and audiovisual experiments, pairing some of his best known pieces alongside newly conceived works that he previously envisioned for this occasion. Unfolding across several floors, the sunken terrace and the museum courtyard, the exhibition will also feature collaborations with Shiro Takatani, Daito Manabe, Carsten Nicolai, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Zakkubalan, Toshio Iwai and Fujiko Nakaya.

Born in Tokyo in 1952, Sakamoto redefined the landscape of an era with transformative contributions to music, film, art and activism. He played a pioneering role in the progression of J-pop, electronic, ambient and avant-classical genres, earning an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Grammy, and two Golden Globes along the way. Even after his passing in March 2023, his spirit remains felt across sonic and visual works as his artistic brilliance lives on.

seeing sound, hearing time is set to open in Tokyo on December 21, 2024 and will be on view through March 30, 2025. Head to the museum’s website for more information on tickets and visiting hours.
